The mission of the Earnest Shepherd Memorial Youth Center is to provide educational, leadership, and recreational programs and facilities for youth and the community that foster character development and create a learning laboratory to help youth help themselves.
Earnest Shepherd Youth Center is in their 55th year of serving area families and youth. In 1962, a group of Clay County citizens created a youth center to serve all area youth and provide a permanent location of the 4-H County Fair. Philanthropist Edna Shepherd donated 62 acres encompassing woods, trails, meadows, and creeks to serve youth in memory of her late husband Earnest Shepherd.
Over the years, the facilities, campsites, and trails have evolved through the hard work of many generous and talented volunteers and organizations. In the mid 70's, an administrative cooperative agreement was established with the University of Missouri Extension Services. This agreement provided additional support for many years.
Earnest Shepherd Youth Center is a private, non-profit agency with IRS 501(c)3 designation. As a 501(c)3, we can receive designated United Way donations. We are funded through grants, individual and business donations, and fundraising events.
Donations are welcome and tax deductible. Please mail check to:

This quote was on the very first fundraising letter sent out by Kemp Woods in the early 60's.
Kemp was the driving force behind the vision of the Youth Center. His leadership and dedication to the youth of the area helped the Youth Center succeed.
All donations no matter how big or small are gratefully appreciated
